Tips to Streamline your Move 6518753_origThe excitement and anticipation of a move can be both wonderful and also a bit scary. The fun of discovering new restaurants, shops, things to do, places to see is exciting. To give you more time to experience new things, a few suggestions:

  • Ask your move counselor for a telephone directory for your new area. It can also be ordered through your local telephone company. This will give you some ideas about the products and services that are available. It will also give you a head start in contacting utilities, cable companies, etc. once you have selected your home and are beginning preparations for your move.
  • If you are moving as a result of a transfer, talk to the employer about the moving assistance available to you and your family. Assistance can vary from company to company but the move benefits available to you can save you lots of money and time.
  • Order the newspaper of the area you are moving to or visit the newspaper’s web site on a regular basis prior to the move. If you are searching for a job, this is a great way to find out what types of jobs are available. You can also get a better idea of local stories of interest which might impact your life after your move.
  • Try to allow yourself some time to get settled in your new environment before beginning to work. Getting to know your new neighbors, finding out where the nearest grocery store, dry cleaners, doctors office and other necessary services are easier to find when you have the time to explore.
  • Be sure and have a detailed street map with you when you move. It all looks so simple when you are traveling around the city with your real estate professional but once you get in the car in search of an area of town or a particular address, finding the location will be much easier.
  • Don’t forget the children. This is a terrifying time for them. After leaving their school, friends and all things familiar, they will need time to adjust to their new surroundings. Let the kids participate in the move. Try to include them in the house hunting by showing them the home you have chosen prior to the move, let them decorate their own room, explore the neighborhood with them, looking for other children their age. If you are moving during the school year, visit their new school with them as soon as possible so the first day of school after the move is less frightening. See Relocation 101 for Children for further information.

Finally, relax and enjoy the excitement of moving to new surroundings. Give yourself permission to experience your new surroundings and all that is good about the new environment you will call home.
