Pojoaque Community Highlights
Pojoaque or "Po-suwae-geh Owingeh" translates to 'water gathering place' in Kewa. Founded as a Spanish Colonial mission, Pojoaque was abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and wasn't resettled until about 1706. Before the Spanish Colonial Era in New Mexico, the Pojoaque area was settled indigenously around 500 AD with its highest population spiking in the 15th and 16th Centuries. The Pueblo is a Tewa-speaking Rio Grande Pueblo, and member of the Eight Northern Pueblos with feast days in December and January.
Today, The Pojoaque Pueblo is the largest employer in the valley, with several business enterprises that include three casino locations, including the luxurious The Buffalo Thunder resort and casino which opened in 2008. With its casino, spa, three award-winning golf courses and a choice of six fantastic restaurants, The Buffalo Thunder Resort is the largest in the state of New Mexico, with guests visiting from all points on the globe.
An invested part of its community, the pueblo has a wellness center with a gym, library, senior center and a boys and girls club, open to tribal and non-tribal members.
Striving to preserve the culture and traditional art of Tewa-speaking pueblos, The Poeh Cultural Center in Pojoaque features amazing pueblo art, exhibits and traditional Indian dances. With the largest Indian arts and crafts shop in northern New Mexico, visitors love to visit and shop Pojoaque for locally made pottery, rugs, sculpture, kachinas, sand paintings and other pieces.
